The University of Waterloo invites applications for a graduate studies position in Civil and Environmental Engineering, specifically in the field of computer vision for smart infrastructure.

This role is part of the Computer Vision for Smart Structure Laboratory (CVISS), led by Dr. Chul Min Yeum, which focuses on practical, application-driven research to integrate intelligence into physical built environments and enhance infrastructure safety and resilience.

Job Description

The successful candidate will participate in research projects aimed at developing mobile robotic sensing and analysis systems for infrastructure inspection and management, human-robot interaction for collaborative inspection, designing and optimizing 2D and 3D processing solutions that extract meaningful insights from visual data, and evaluating the quality and safety of infrastructure using Non-destructive Testing (NDT).

Key responsibilities include coordinating research projects, disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations, communicating with industries and stakeholders, participating in research proposal drafting, and assisting in organizing relevant workshops and demos.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be eligible, candidates should hold an undergraduate, MASc, or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Software Engineering, or System Engineering. Familiarity with Robot Operating System (ROS) 1 & 2, drone development, signal/imaging processing, AI/ML libraries, NDT methods, and proficiency in software tools like Python, Matlab, LabView are also required.

Additionally, experience in working with large datasets, operating optical sensors, sensing hardware, and familiarity with Git for version control are preferred. Strong machine learning development skills, knowledge in image recognition, computer vision, and graph neural networks are highly desirable.
