Laboratory Assistant Data Entry Specialist
At PHSA, we are seeking a skilled Laboratory Assistant Data Entry Specialist to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where you will be responsible for receiving patients, collecting blood specimens, preparing specimens for analysis, and processing specimens for testing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive patients by examining test requisitions, confirming patient demographics, and entering demographics into the computer system.
- Collect blood specimens from patients, label specimens with required information, and dispose of sharps.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by checking specimen identification and requisition, separating serum or plasma from cells by centrifugation, and preparing blood films.
- Process specimens by receiving, sorting, and labeling for testing, logging data into the computer database, and batching specimens for distribution.
- Send specimens to referral laboratories by logging required information into the computer database, packaging specimens according to legislated requirements, and placing in the designated pick-up area.
- Perform receptionist duties, including answering telephones, responding to general inquiries, taking and relaying messages, paging laboratory and medical staff, and relaying test results.
- Maintain work area by cleaning blood collection baskets, wiping counters and work benches with disinfectant, defrosting fridges, and maintaining cryostat and frozen section rooms.
- Schedule and book patient appointments using a computerized scheduling system.
- Perform ECG testing by attaching electrodes to the patient, running the ECG, and printing the report for designated personnel.
Requirements:
- Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, and one year's recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in foundational documents, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
