About the Opportunity

This is a designated position within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at Nova Scotia Health Authority. The successful candidate must be from a designated group and self-identify as Indigenous. The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) works under the direction of Management to support all members of the department by performing various functions related to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing. These functions include specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens on an analyzer. Additional responsibilities may include supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service activities. The MLA must adhere to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures, and maintain a professional appearance and excellent customer service skills.

About You

We are seeking a candidate with a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, basic understanding of medical terminology, and manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects. The ability to accurately number and label specimens, and adapt to updates in operating procedures is also essential. Basic computer skills, particularly with Meditech, are preferred. The successful candidate will be required to travel to local indigenous communities, and may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.

Hours and Compensation

This is a permanent, full-time position with 75 hours bi-weekly. The hourly rate is $23.19 - $26.27. Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
