Job Summary

The City of Ottawa is seeking a skilled Communications Officer Trainee to join its team. As a key member of the Paramedic Service, you will be responsible for providing emergency medical call taking and dispatching services to the Eastern Ontario Catchment Area.

Under direct supervision, you will receive and assess calls for medical assistance, provide medical pre-arrival instructions to callers, and deploy emergency vehicles and paramedics to obtain maximum coverage and efficiency.

You will work in a fast-paced environment, making sound, independent decisions and exercising discretion in emergency situations. Your strong communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to effectively interact with clients, paramedics, and other emergency services personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency medical call taking and dispatching services
  • Assess calls for medical assistance and deploy emergency vehicles and paramedics
  • Make sound, independent decisions and exercise discretion in emergency situations
  • Communicate effectively with clients, paramedics, and other emergency services personnel

Requirements

  • One year of post-secondary education in Emergency Communications, Public Safety, or Health Care
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a customer service field (face-to-face or telephone)
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and/or AED certificates
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification course is desirable
  • Current Emergency Medical Responder certificate (EMR) is desirable
