Civil Engineer for Structural Dynamics and Risk Assessment

We are looking for a Civil Engineer with a keen interest in numerical modelling to join our Specialist Technology, Analytics and Research (STAR) team in Toronto, ON. This position will be part of a center of excellence for technical innovation in the built environment. Our team employs cutting-edge technologies and methods to advance Arup into new markets, ushering in a safer, healthier, sustainable, and resilient future.
The STAR team has expertise in structural dynamics, stress analysis, wind engineering, and fluid mechanics. We can simulate almost anything in the built environment, utilizing the best of numerical modelling (FEM, CFD), risk modeling, and digital innovation to predict the impacts of natural hazards.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake numerical analyses using first-principles methods to solve clients' most difficult challenges.
- Perform and report linear and non-linear, static and dynamic structural finite element analysis, principally for structural and geo-engineering applications (e.g. earthquake, wind, and vibration analysis).
- Conduct studies to understand the risk posed by natural hazards and the physical threat of climate change.
- Collaborate with other structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and risk consultants on innovative buildings and infrastructure projects.
- Work on defined tasks under the supervision of a senior engineer.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Minimum 4-year bachelor's degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Fundamental knowledge of structural mechanics, dynamics, and/or risk modeling, as appropriate.
- Basic understanding of computer programming and/or coding experience.
- Interest in the built environment and the design of sustainable infrastructure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Cover letter included in application submission.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher.
- A MS or PhD in engineering is desirable but not required.
- Proficiency in non-linear finite element method analysis.
- Experience or familiarity with the built environment, i.e. buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil infrastructure.
