Job Responsibilities

This role involves working as part of a dynamic team responsible for laboratory testing at 31 sites across the lower mainland and central coast of BC. Your primary responsibilities will include preparing specimens for testing, verifying specimen type according to established procedures, sorting and assigning laboratory numbers, and applying barcode labels. You will also receive incoming specimens, requisitions, and check for accuracy and completeness of information.


Key tasks include:



  • Preparing specimens for testing by performing duties such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and loading samples.
  • Verifying specimen type according to established procedures, sorting, and assigning laboratory numbers.
  • Receiving incoming specimens, requisitions, and checking for accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Processing test requisitions by entering patient data into computer systems, issuing new patient identification numbers where required, and obtaining or clarifying missing information.
  • Responding to requests for test results, faxing same as required.
  • Receiving telephone/fax requests for information and directing requests according to established procedures.
  • Filing and organizing records, such as requisitions, statistical information.
  • Identifying and communicating operational issues and computer/equipment-related problems to supervisor.
  • Storing and retrieving specimens under appropriate conditions, documenting, and shipping samples to other laboratories and discarding samples according to established procedures.
  • Preparing, recording, and sending specimens and request forms to outside/referral laboratories and hospitals according to Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and other regulatory requirements.


Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:



  • A Grade 12 education, medical terminology, and two years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • An ability to keyboard at 25 wpm.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • A commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety, as well as foundational documents and legislative commitments.
