**Job Overview**

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) in Surrey, BC.

**About the Role**

This is a key position that provides critical support to pathologists and laboratory staff in performing various tasks related to specimen handling, processing, and testing.

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting pathologists with gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration
  • Loading cassettes on tissue processors, changing, recycling, and disposing of reagents according to established procedures
  • Labeling glass slides for section cutting
  • Disposing of pathology samples according to established protocols
  • Preparing specimens and other items for shipment by packaging, labeling, and filling out requisitions
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, such as tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, water baths, and testing equipment
  • Performing daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment
  • Receiving telephone/fax requests for information and directing requests according to established procedures
  • Filing and organizing reports, requisitions, specimens, blocks, and slides

**Requirements**

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Completion of Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to type at 25 wpm
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

**What We Offer**

We offer a competitive salary range of $55,000 - $65,000 per annum, based on experience. In addition to the base salary, we provide comprehensive benefits, including municipal pension plan, psychological health & safety programs, and holistic wellness resources.
