Campus Wellness Strategy

The Wellness Coordinator plays a key role in building a campus culture of well-being by collaborating with key stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive campus health promotion/wellness program that fosters a positive and inclusive culture and enhances the overall wellness of the diverse student population at Douglas College.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates activities in support of a campus wellness strategy.
  • Works in collaboration with key campus partners to educate all students and the College community on the link between wellness and learning and student success.
  • Plans and conducts campus needs assessments to inform wellness programming through formal surveys and informal student focus groups.
  • Plans and implements health promotion programming for all students and employees, including wellness events, active bystander training, consent/sexual violence awareness initiatives, online educational materials, in-classroom workshops, etc.
  • Ensures all wellness programming aligns with College strategic plans, policies, and initiatives.
  • Supports the College in designing and implementing programming that meets the relevant provincial mandates.
  • Conducts program and activity evaluations and implements required changes to ensure programs and activities continue to support the wellness strategy.
  • Provides guidance and support to the wellness peer leadership program (Student Wellness Awareness Team) including recruitment, training, and supervision.

Wellness Operations Oversight

  • Develops and administers operating budgets for all wellness activities, programs, and special events.
  • Hires and supervises student assistants, including providing onboarding and ensuring the provision of appropriate training and professional development and evaluations.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises student volunteers.
  • Initiates and processes appropriate personnel, payroll, accounting, and purchasing documentation.
  • Ensures all program and College procedures are followed and recommends changes in procedures.

Stakeholder Relationships and Collaboration

  • Works as part of the Student Life team and collaborates with Student Life Coordinators to integrate a wellness aspect to all programming, including orientation and transitional initiatives.
  • Develops partnerships with other Student Affairs and Services departments, such as Counselling and Student Support and Conduct, and other Faculties (and departments) to implement wellness-based initiatives.
  • Develops partnerships with community, provincial, and national health promotion organizations to create access to resources and participation in on-campus events and training.
  • Collaborates with the Student Life Communication Officer to create marketing and promotion for all wellness programming.
  • Responds to external and internal requests for information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Promotion, Health Education, Public Health, or related field, together with a minimum of two years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing student-focused, holistic health promotion/wellness programming that supports student success based on best-practices.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in the design and delivery of health promotion educational materials.
  • Knowledge of health promotion issues and well-being challenges faced by a diverse post-secondary student population and familiarity with policies and trends within higher education institutions.
  • Knowledge of sexual violence and misconduct prevention strategies and familiarity with relevant provincial and post-secondary policies/mandates.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement initiatives or projects that align with and support departmental and the College's strategic plans.
  • Experience with data-driven, evidence-based decision making and proven ability to conduct formal and informal needs assessments and program evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience speaking in front of small and large groups in informal and formal settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise student staff and volunteers to achieve assigned deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including a good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and tactfully with the public, students, partners, and College employees, especially under pressure.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work within a team and independently with a minimum of supervision and an ability to establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner that reflects positively on the department and the College.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management.
  • Valid B.C. Drivers' license or access to a reliable transportation to accommodate activities at all campuses.
