Capital Planning and Management Role Overview

The Senior Financial Partner, Capital Planning and Management is responsible for planning and implementing CN's capital plan in accordance with operational needs and strategic objectives. This role focuses on multi-year planning of capital initiatives, identifying capital needs and opportunities to facilitate the rapid deployment of capital for optimal outcomes.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Capital Planning
    • Develop and maintain the 36-month rolling capital plan of projects.
    • Track 10-year capital needs and major multi-year capital initiatives.
    • Prioritize projects based on key parameters and CN's strategic areas of focus.
    • Provide summary views to senior leadership on the capital plan, including Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) and regulatory aspects.
  2. Capital Management
    • Track forecasts of Year-End Outcomes (YEOs) associated with projects and envelopes.
    • Support the sign-off of the overall YEO for the capital envelope.
    • Reconcile changes made by Financial Partners related to capital requirements of ongoing projects.
  3. Reporting and Auditing
    • Create presentations for executive leadership and the Board of Directors on capital planning and management.
    • Conduct Post Completion Audits (PCAs) of projects completed to identify benefits and scope within approved budget and timeline.
  4. Governance
    • Perform SOX key controls related to capital administration.
    • Ensure clear processes and accountabilities for capital planning and management.

Working Conditions:

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines and handle pressure and stress.
