Strategic Technology Leader for Valard Group

Valard, the premier utility contractor in Canada and a leading member of the Quanta Group, seeks an experienced Enterprise Architect to lead its technology strategy.
The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding a team of solution architects, application architects, and business analysts in designing, developing, and maintaining Valard's business applications. This role requires a strategic thinker who can balance tactical application development with long-term planning, ensuring that solutions align with organizational goals and deliver measurable value.
This is a challenging role that demands technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. The Enterprise Architect will spend approximately 60% of their time working hands-on with teams to implement and optimize systems, while dedicating 40% to strategic initiatives such as developing business cases, roadmaps, and return on investment (ROI) analysis for leadership approval.
Tactical Responsibilities- Lead Development & Implementation: Provide guidance to application and solution architects in designing, building, and deploying applications that meet business needs and adhere to technical standards.
- Support Application Maintenance: Oversee the ongoing support and optimization of existing applications, ensuring they continue to meet business requirements and operate efficiently.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with business analysts to translate business requirements into technical specifications and ensure successful delivery.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Assist in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues in collaboration with the development team.
- Best Practices & Standards: Enforce development best practices, code standards, and architectural guidelines to ensure scalable, secure, and reliable solutions.
- Quality Assurance: Oversee testing protocols and ensure applications meet quality benchmarks before deployment.
- Documentation & Training: Ensure comprehensive documentation is maintained for all applications and systems, and the team receives appropriate training.
- Biz Case Development: Partner with business stakeholders to develop business cases and present justifications for new applications or major updates to existing systems, including cost-benefit analyses and projected ROI.
- Application Road Mapping: Develop and maintain a forward-looking application roadmap, balancing short-term business needs with long-term strategic goals.
- Technology Strategy Alignment: Ensure application development and maintenance strategies align with broader organizational goals, particularly in areas of digital transformation, automation, and cloud adoption.
- Budgeting & Resource Allocation: Work with senior leadership to develop and manage budgets for application development projects, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources.
- Vendor Management: Collaborate with external vendors and partners to identify technology solutions that complement in-house development and align with business needs.
- Continuous Improvement: Promote innovation and process improvement by identifying emerging technologies and best practices that can drive further efficiencies and value in the application portfolio.
- Familiarity with data governance, compliance, and security practices.
- Experience with enterprise content management systems and business process automation tools.
- Ability to foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning within technical teams.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and lead teams in finding effective solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong technical background in application development, preferably with experience in Microsoft M365, Azure, and automation platforms.
- Proven experience in building business cases, performing cost-benefit analyses, and aligning technology strategy with organizational goals.
- Strong understanding of project management methodologies (Waterfall, Agile) and experience leading cross-functional teams.
We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $160,000 per year, based on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a generous retirement plan.
