Pathologists' Assistant

About the Role
Sinai Health is a leading academic health science centre with a provincial, national and international reputation for discovering and delivering life-changing care. Our team is seeking a highly skilled Pathologists' Assistant to support our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks, including:
- Evaluation, dissection and description of surgical specimens, requiring a detailed knowledge and understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy, pathology, clinical context and current protocols.
- Autopsy procedure, including review and summation of patient identifying data, internal and external examination, evisceration, dissection, microdissection and appropriate sampling for histology.
- Training pathology residents in the skills of surgical specimen description, dissection and sampling, autopsy procedures and ancillary studies.
Responsibilities
- Receive, accession and label surgical specimens.
- Provide gross description, dissection and submission of histological sections for all surgical specimens.
- Sample and aliquot tissue specimens for ancillary studies.
- Assist pathologists in the processing of surgical specimens.
- Obtain clinical history, reports and other data as required.
- Photography and x-ray of specimens when necessary and maintain all pertinent records.
- Maintain storage and disposal of specimens.
- Maintain the areas and supplies in pathology receiving, grossing room, autopsy and specimen storage area.
- Load tissue processors.
- Maintain clean and safe work area.
- Adhere to established safe work practices.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a MSc/MClSc (Pathologists' Assistant) or BSc with MLT from an accredited educational institution.
- Minimum 2 years recent experience as a Pathologists' Assistant preferred.
- CAP membership and certification preferred; or eligible for certification.
- CMLTO registration or ASCP certification an asset.
- Good working knowledge of computer applications, i.e. Lab Information System (LIS), MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and voice recognition software, i.e. Dragon Naturally Speaking.
- Ability to teach and mentor staff, residents and students.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrated satisfactory performance and attendance history.
