Job Title: Deputy Chief Forensic Pathologist

Join the Canadian Association of Pathologists as a Deputy Chief Forensic Pathologist and contribute to the administration of justice, preventing premature death, and protecting public safety.

Job Summary:

The Deputy Chief Forensic Pathologist will support the planning, organization, direction, and administration of the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS) under the Coroners Act. This role requires a certified expert in forensic pathology to provide high-quality services to coroners, families, the public, police, Crown Attorneys, lawyers, and courts in Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Discharge the powers and duties of the Chief Forensic Pathologist under the Coroners Act as delegated in the absence of the CFP.
  2. Support the quality management system for medicolegal autopsies, including quality assurance processes and quality control mechanisms.
  3. Support the oversight of forensic pathology units through active liaison, review of quality audit reporting, management of funding agreements, and compliance monitoring.
  4. Contribute to high-quality and professional medicolegal autopsies and related pathology services and effective policy development through participation in various internal and external committees.
  5. Maintain a forensic pathology on-call schedule for high-profile death notifications to ensure effective case triage and appropriate case assignment.
  6. Contribute to effective tissue management practices and decision-making for organ retention.
  7. Provide direct supervision to the Forensic Anthropologist and assist the CFP to address performance management and quality of work issues of registered pathologists and other consultants.
  8. Assume direct responsibility for complex cases, requiring in-depth and extensive professional expertise, performing autopsies, etc., and presenting expert opinion evidence.
  9. Participate in the Credentialing Committee to make recommendations to the CFP regarding the accreditation of registered pathologists.
  10. Develop, conduct, and participate in educational programs to upgrade the professional and technical knowledge of pathologists, coroners, police, and other members of the death investigation team, the legal profession, undergraduate medical and law students.
  11. Provide consultative and advisory services to police, Crown Attorneys, lawyers, coroners, offering professional interpretation, guidance, and authoritative advice on avenues of examination, reference material, etc.
  12. Maintain effective liaison and collaboration with key stakeholders involved in investigations of sudden or unexpected death.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by the CFP.
Requirements:
  1. A Medical degree and license to practice medicine in Ontario.
  2. RCPSC specialist certification in Anatomical Pathology or General Pathology by examination or equivalent certification.
  3. Postgraduate certification by examination in forensic pathology by the RCPSC or equivalent certification.
  4. Certification by examination in anatomical pathology or general pathology and postgraduate certification by examination in forensic pathology.

Technical Knowledge and Experience:
  1. Knowledge in the field of forensic pathology, including contemporary scientific research and literature, and the use of an evidence-based approach to formulate expert opinions.
  2. Demonstrated experience in senior-level administration and policy development.
  3. Knowledge of the death investigation system in Ontario.
  4. Ability to interpret and apply the Coroners Act, Criminal Code, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and other relevant legislation that applies to death investigation.
  5. Knowledge of quality management systems, theory, and application, quality assurance practices, and quality control measures.
  6. Knowledge of the legal system, investigative techniques, and requirements in law enforcement, rules of evidence in criminal and civil cases, the application of forensic pathology to the investigation of sudden deaths, and the administration of justice through the provision of expert opinions and testimony.
Relationship Management and Communication Skills:
  1. Demonstrated superior written, oral, and interpersonal skills and can influence and negotiate with partners and stakeholders to find collaborative solutions to complex issues.
  2. Demonstrated stakeholder management skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships of trust with senior management, clients, and partners.

  4. Experience managing sensitive and contentious issues and providing expert witness evidence.
