Job Summary


The University of British Columbia is seeking a Research Assistant to support the technical aspects of various projects related to biobank management and sample analysis in the context of interstitial lung disease (ILD). The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Chris Ryerson and Dr. Gillian Goobie and will be responsible for handling and processing patient samples, including blood, sputum, saliva, sinus, and lung tissue.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Plans, optimizes, and performs experiments utilizing complex procedures, including immunoassays, western blot, cell culture, and cell-based assays.
  • Handles and processes patient samples, including blood, sputum, saliva, sinus, and lung tissue.
  • Isolates and characterizes RNA and DNA.
  • Performs basic literature and internet searches for research and laboratory-related resources.
  • Maintains research-related records and ILD biobank databases, entering data according to established protocols.
  • Orders equipment, reagents, and supplies and liaises with vendors and institutional finance and procurement departments.
  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots problems with standard equipment.
  • Responsible for organizing laboratory and stock, maintaining inventory.
  • Prepares and/or maintains media, buffer, reagents, solutions, cultures, and related materials for routine laboratory use.
  • Provides lab orientation and training for equipment, techniques, and SOPs to new staff and students, recording training certificates and logs of lab members.
  • Writes SOPs for new studies and reports, amending biosafety and ethics protocols as needed.
  • Biobanks samples and maintains inventory lists.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Requirements:



  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Must be fastidious with respect to lab records and protocols.
  • An understanding of or background in techniques such as tissue culturing, flow cytometry, gene expression profiling, and ELISAs would be a strong asset.
  • Experience in training others is an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment is an asset.
