The Kingston Health Sciences Centre seeks a skilled Physician Assistant to join our team in the Nephrology Department. In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care under the supervision of a Nephrologist physician.

About the Position

This is a temporary full-time position with an estimated salary range of $47,610 to $57,140 per year, depending on experience. The successful candidate will work rotating 8-hour shifts and participate in out-patient clinics as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Nephrology patient care: Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations; perform appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies, perform minor procedures (i.e. removal of permanent dialysis catheters);
  • Provide broad clinical support in the management of in-patients diagnosed with acute, chronic and end-stage renal insufficiency;
  • Provide, monitor, and adjust dialysis orders for patients with acute, chronic and end-stage renal insufficiency including selection of dialysate, 'dry weight', and erythropoietin dosing;
  • Provide electronic medical record dialysis prescriptions at the time of hospital admission and discharge;
  • Support continuity of care through liaison with medical staff and other allied health care providers, including those in the renal unit and satellite dialysis units;
  • Support patient referral and transfer to and from other facilities including dialysis units and other hospitals;
  • Provide education to patients and families;
  • Support discharge planning in the units;
  • Support educational deliverables of the division including teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows;
  • Support research deliverables of the division including enrollment to clinical trials;
  • In-person and/or telemedicine visits to satellite dialysis units and clinics;
  • Administrative/office duties: Follow-up of lab results/imaging study reports, contact patients post-discharge as required. Participate in Nephrology quality improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Must hold a US or Canadian BSc (PA) degree or equivalent experience or Department of Defense education/experience;
  • Must be certified by either the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (US) or the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada;
  • Must meet the competencies outlined by the province in the Defining the Physician Assistant Role in Ontario document;
  • Minimum of 3 years of PA experience is preferred. Prior experience or knowledge in general internal medicine and/or nephrology will be considered an asset;
  • Strong bedside manner, able to make emergency decisions quickly;
  • Demonstrated ability to educate patients and families;
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills within the interprofessional care team;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and documentation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all team members;
  • Evidence of strong mentoring, teaching, team building, change leadership, organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to work well in stressful situations;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with conflict situations and proactively and effectively resolve issues impacting on quality and continuity of care;
  • Exceptional time management, organizational and prioritization skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and make evidence-based decisions;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret/participate in research;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer database and data analysis and ability to work with electronic medical records;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and participate in research activities;
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and Vulnerable sector search required.
