Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Service Worker to join our team at The Royal Mental Health Centre. As a Service Worker, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care and support to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee patient check-in and check-out processes, documenting patient movement in security log books and wanding patients into secure units as required.
  • Monitor patient movement, escort patients to groups and treatments, and supervise yard and common room activities, including meal times.
  • Oversee and monitor patients with appropriate privilege levels to hospital and grounds areas for activity and programming needs.
  • Responsible for site visitor supervision and assisting patients with completing community itineraries and community patient checks.
  • Provide unit client support, including lunch service, hot water coffee/tea availability, linen changes, shower/tub key sign-out, kitchen and sharps monitoring, and client shopping.
  • Oversee and assist with patient cleaning, laundry/linen changes, and bedrooms as necessary.
  • Implement interventions within the scope of active behavior plans and assess and report interactions amongst patients under the direction of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide client-centered opportunities consistent with the Passport Program for individuals with intellectual disability, including accompanying clients into the community to foster community integration, activation, and enhance quality of life.
  • Communicate with community agencies and families as directed by the interdisciplinary team and participate in searches/security interventions as needed.
  • Participate in discharge planning and implementation of plans with the interdisciplinary team and community agencies, and assist residents with necessary applications for the discharge process.
  • Minimize risk to patients, visitors, and staff by being aware of client care plans and detecting changes in client status, and create a therapeutic environment by relating to clients in a respectful manner and responding to individual needs.
  • Ensure confidentiality of client information is maintained and participate in specific assignments to meet the needs of a group of patients or one individual patient as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Utilize the hospital's electronic documentation system in accordance with hospital documentation policy and communicate with the interdisciplinary team to order/reorder supplies, transport/porter supplies, equipment, and mail as necessary.
  • Share responsibility with the team for total patient care and upkeep of a safe patient environment, perform functions related to the tidiness and cleanliness of patient care areas, and deliver requisitions, equipment, specimens, and other porter activities as required.
  • Participate in evaluations for program planning and reporting, maintain infection control principles and proper use of personal protective equipment, and work with the team to maintain patient care areas neat and safe from hazards.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies, and procedures of The Royal and ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal's Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination-Free policy.
Qualifications
  • Minimum one (1) year post-secondary diploma or certification in a health-related field required.
  • All mandatory training requirements upon hire.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid required.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check – vulnerable sector required.
  • Possession of a valid G driver's license is required.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with mental illness is preferred.
  • Familiarity with infection control principles and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional multi-disciplinary treatment team.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension, and written expression. Bilingualism an asset.
