Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Service Worker to join our team at The Royal Mental Health Centre. As a key member of our interdisciplinary treatment team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care and support to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee patient check-in and check-out processes, ensuring accurate documentation and secure unit access.
  • Monitor patient movement and escort patients to groups, treatments, and activities, promoting a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Supervise patients with varying privilege levels, ensuring access to hospital and grounds areas for programming and activity needs.
  • Support site visitor supervision and assist patients with community itinerary and patient checks.
  • Contribute to unit client support, including lunch service, hot water coffee/tea availability, linen changes, shower/tub key sign-out, kitchen and sharps monitoring, and client shopping.
  • Oversee and assist with patient cleaning, laundry, and bedroom maintenance, promoting a clean and safe living environment.
  • Implement interventions within the scope of active behavior plans, promoting patient well-being and safety.
  • Support diversional activities to enhance social and vocational skills, as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Assess and report interactions amongst patients, contributing to the development of effective treatment plans.
  • Provide client-centered opportunities for community integration, activation, and enhanced quality of life, as part of the Passport Program.
  • Communicate with community agencies and families, as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in searches and security interventions, as needed, to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Contribute to discharge planning and implementation, working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team and community agencies.
  • Assist residents with necessary applications for the discharge process, under the direction of the team.
  • Minimize risk to patients, visitors, and staff by being aware of client care plans and detecting changes in client status.
  • Create a therapeutic environment by relating to clients in a respectful manner and responding to individual needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information and adhere to hospital documentation policies.
  • Participate in specific assignments to meet the needs of patients or groups, as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Utilize hospital electronic documentation systems in accordance with hospital documentation policies.
  • Communicate with the interdisciplinary team to order/reorder supplies, transport equipment, and mail, as necessary.
  • Share responsibility with the team for total patient care and upkeep of safe patient environments.
  • Perform functions related to tidiness and cleanliness of patient care areas.
  • Deliver requisitions, equipment, specimens, and other porter activities, as required.
  • Participate in evaluations for program planning and reporting.
  • Maintain infection control principles and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work with the team to maintain patient care areas neat and safe from hazards.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal's Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination-Free policy.
Qualifications
  • Minimum one (1) year post-secondary diploma or certification in a health-related field.
  • All mandatory training requirements upon hire.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check – vulnerable sector.
  • Possession of a valid G driver's license.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with mental illness is preferred.
  • Familiarity with infection control principles and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional multi-disciplinary treatment team.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension, and written expression. Bilingualism is an asset.
