Job Summary
The Chemical Technologist will provide technical support in the field of Chemistry, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of undergraduate laboratories, preparation rooms, and instrumentation facilities. This role involves preparing equipment and chemicals for experiments, ordering supplies, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare equipment and chemicals for course-related experiments in the chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Order chemicals and equipment for course-related experiments in the chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Prepare samples for experiments and laboratory term examinations, as well as standard solutions for qualitative and quantitative analysis of experimental products.
- Assist in the development and testing of new experimental procedures for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment lockers for students, and chemical inventory and supplies used in teaching laboratories.
- Instruct students in proper sample preparation for samples which must be submitted for further analysis.
- Meet laboratory preparation deadlines on a daily basis, ensuring accurate laboratory preparation.
- Consult with laboratory coordinators and safety officers regularly to ensure the smooth operation of the teaching laboratories and compliance with safety procedures.
- Provide support to researchers in the use of equipment housed in the teaching laboratories and related instrumentation facilities.
Requirements
- Completion of a 3-year college diploma in chemistry with 2 years of on-the-job training.
- Knowledge of all areas of Chemistry and specialized training in areas such as NMR, UV-Vis, IR, GC, and HPLC.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet daily laboratory preparation deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, with a high degree of manual dexterity and attention to detail.
Working Conditions
The Chemical Technologist will work in a laboratory setting, with exposure to various chemicals and potential hazards. The incumbent must have knowledge of current safety protocols and procedures, and be able to develop expertise to deal with chemicals on a routine basis.
