Job Summary
1. Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist in delivering a seamless undergraduate laboratory program, anticipating and providing solutions to problems without interruption. They will instruct and oversee undergraduate students and teaching assistants in matters related to safety, operation of laboratory and scientific equipment. Additionally, they will assist principal investigators, graduate students, and research associates in the design, purchase, construction, and maintenance of research equipment.
2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Techniques
The incumbent requires an Ontario (3-year) diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology or Chemical Technology, as well as several years of practical experience in the field of chemical engineering and/or the chemical process industry. They must possess skills in instrumental analysis, design, assembly, interface, maintenance, and repair of bench and pilot plant scale equipment. They must also have knowledge of the properties of chemicals and chemical mixtures, electrical and electronics in laboratory applications, machine shop procedures, and advanced knowledge of laboratory practices.
3. Supervision and Leadership
The incumbent will instruct faculty, students, and co-workers working in the undergraduate laboratories with respect to safety and provide instruction to undergraduate, teaching assistants, post-graduates, research associates, and academic staff in the proper usage of various departmental equipment and analytical instruments. They will also provide direction and guidance to junior chemical technologists.
4. Interactions and Communication
The incumbent will interact daily with undergraduate students, teaching assistants, and academic staff on issues pertaining to the undergraduate program. They will also interact with graduate students, faculty, and research associates in connection with their research. They will build good working relations with other groups to resource goods and services from other departments and external sources.
5. Work Assignment and Supervision
The incumbent works independently, reporting directly to the Department Manager. They will work directly with the originator until completion, initiating changes or redesigning equipment in consultation with the originator. They will participate in discussions on new equipment, the improvement of existing apparatus, and work with the Lab Coordinator and the supervisor of that project.
6. Problem-Solving and Standard Procedures
The incumbent will apply common sense to trouble-shooting techniques in the undergraduate laboratory. They will design, construct, assemble the apparatus, and frequently write and/or recommend and review Standard Operating Procedures for equipment and experimental procedures. They will also review or establish safety protocols for the Competitive Teams.
7. Departmental Information
The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining approximately $4 million worth of laboratory equipment. They will work in areas where toxic, flammable, explosive, carcinogenic chemicals, and bio-hazardous materials are utilized and stored. They must adhere to legislated safety guidelines and ensure the safe operation of all equipment.
8. Unusual Factors
The incumbent must work in areas where toxic, flammable, explosive, carcinogenic chemicals, and bio-hazardous materials are utilized and stored. They must also work with and/or handle all chemicals and bottled gases, maintain delicate and expensive lab equipment, and occasionally work in a machine shop environment and its inherent hazards.
9. General Comments
The incumbent must deal with conflicting demands and frequent interruptions. They will contribute to numerous activities in the Department and University activities, such as Homecoming, Orientation, Hechmet, often representing the Department.
