Job Summary
The Chemical Technologist plays a critical role in supporting the teaching and research activities of the Chemistry Department. This position involves providing technical expertise in the field of chemistry, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of laboratory equipment, and collaborating with faculty and staff to develop and implement new laboratory experiments and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare equipment and chemicals for course-related experiments in the chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Order chemicals and equipment for course-related experiments in the chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Prepare samples for experiments and laboratory term examinations, as well as standard solutions for qualitative and quantitative analysis of experimental products.
- Collaborate with laboratory coordinators and course instructors to develop and test new experiments and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including inventory management and ordering.
- Provide technical support and training to students, teaching assistants, and faculty members on the use of laboratory equipment and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and regulations, including WHMIS and laboratory safety training.
Requirements
- Completion of a 3-year college diploma in chemistry, with 2 years of on-the-job training required.
- Knowledge of all areas of chemistry, including laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
Working Conditions
The Chemical Technologist will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with exposure to various chemicals and laboratory equipment. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability. The incumbent must also be able to multitask, coping well with the pressure of having to deal with many people at one time.
