Job Summary:

The Regional Municipality of York is seeking a highly skilled Strategic Communications Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Communications and Special Projects department, you will play a critical role in providing strategic communications advice to clients, supporting the development of communications plans, and creating executive-level speaking notes and presentations.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Communications Counsel: Provide strategic communications counsel to client groups to determine approaches to internal and external communications, media relations, employee engagement, and issues management.
  • Departmental Communication Strategies: Support the Manager in the development and delivery of departmental communication strategies, programs, and services, including providing executive communications support to the Commissioner as needed.
  • Communications Planning: Provide key inputs in the creation and implementation of communications plans and strategies to support corporate events and initiatives, create media releases, and online communication content.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research on best practices to support effective communications, as required.
  • Content Creation: Draft and edit copy for communication materials following plain language principles.
  • Messaging Consistency: Review copy to ensure consistency of departmental messaging.
  • Committee Participation: Participate on committees, work groups, task forces, and special projects, as assigned.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch, department, and corporate goals.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Successful completion of a University Degree in Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Communication Knowledge: Strong knowledge of communication practices and theory, including strategic communications, issues management, internal communications best practices, traditional and social media.
  • Writing and Presentation Skills: Highly developed skills in writing, editing, and presenting, using plain language best practices.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Demonstrated experience fostering cooperative and collaborative working relationships, leading multiple projects, overcoming change and adversity.
  • Confidentiality and Discretion: Experience dealing with confidential materials and exercising good judgment and discretion in dealing with politically sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Political Acuity: Proven political acuity and skills to respond to and deescalate issues.
  • Event Planning and Media Relations: Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and ability in event planning, media relations, communications training, social media, art direction, and photography.
  • York Region Knowledge: Understanding of York Region, the nine local municipalities, municipal government, and the programs and services provided to the public.
  • Legislation and Regulations: Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Legislation, Standards, Acts, and Regulations.
  • Corporate Competencies: Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including communication, innovation, teamwork, and collaboration, and personal ownership.
