About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Health Care Worker to join our team at BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services. As a Health Care Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and maintenance of skills that are relevant for patients' reintegration in the community setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Patient Reintegration: Work one-on-one with clients on the unit or in the community, following the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and supporting small community outings (SSCO).
  • Prepare for Groups: Ensure program materials are ready, review and prepare group content, and clean up the group space as required. Ensure program items and materials are safe, clean, ready, and appropriate for patient use.
  • Teach and Demonstrate Skills: Work alongside clients to demonstrate and teach skills such as laundry, making beds, general cleaning, personal hygiene support, accompanying patients in the community, and orienting patients to resources in the community.
  • Establish Therapeutic Relationships: Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients/families while fostering a culture of patient and staff safety. Maintain confidentiality and respect for patients' rights and privacy through continual engagement and communication.
  • Collaborate with Interdisciplinary Team: Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team by participating in care planning meetings to identify patient strengths, limitations, and areas for development. Contribute to the development of specific program curricula to achieve target outcomes.
  • Ensure Patient and Staff Safety: Ensure the safety of staff and patients by reviewing the Kardex, risk triggers, and signature behaviors, nursing care plans of any and all patients assigned to and the unit milieu. Communicate reports and records in the patient chart, any patient behaviors of concern, including patient verbal or physical aggression, or violence. Participate in the unit's routine safety checks.
  • Document Patient Progress: Document patient progress and behavioral changes and communicate significant observations such as discomfort and/or pain, or condition/complaints and/or accidents, which the patient reports and feedback from the patient into the care planning progress to the Registered Nurse or designate; as applicable.
Requirements
  • Qualifications: Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Nursing Assistant Program or Care Attendant Program, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment. Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study.
