Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Family Duty Counsel to join our team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a key member of our legal services team, you will provide critical support to clients navigating family law matters in the courthouse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide family law duty counsel services, including intake and assessment of clients, procedural and summary legal advice, and representation in court.
  • Prepare and review court documents, including applications, answers, motions, and financial statements.
  • Represent clients in the Superior Court of Justice (Unified Family Court) at first appearances, conferences, motions, and other court hearings.
  • Advocate for clients in court and on court forms, ensuring their rights are protected.
  • Assist unrepresented clients with Child Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) matters, including document preparation and in-court appearances.
  • Provide advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Center (FLIC) and other advice clinics as required.
  • Ensure high-quality legal work in a cost-effective manner, maintaining client files and conflict lists, and recording data and producing reports as needed.

Requirements

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation, particularly child protection law, and in-court experience in both family and child protection matters.
  • Client-focused with sound judgment and problem-solving skills, results-oriented, and accountable.
  • Ability to communicate with accuracy and fluency in both English and French, and to represent clients in court.
  • Ability to draft legal documents without need for review.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario's operations and mandate.
  • Prior family and CYFSA law experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in aboriginal legal issues.
  • Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues.
