Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at ATS Automation. As a key member of our Life Sciences division, you will be responsible for designing and developing innovative solutions for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations to determine the strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, and other relevant factors in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
  • Produce concepts, working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies, or products using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards, such as OSHA, CE, or customer-specific requirements.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, and other relevant factors.
  • Liaise with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Liaise with vendors for technical information and specifications.
  • Communicate all requested design changes to the Project Lead or Team Lead.
  • Responsible for communicating progress on tasks to the supervising designer.
  • Formalize and update drawing documentation.
  • Periodically supervise the mechanical design effort on a project level, delegating tasks to a team of people.
  • Organize documentation, including quotes, project plans, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, and other relevant materials on projects you are supervising.
  • Responsible for communicating time estimates and resource requirements on design tasks to the Team Lead or Project Lead.
  • Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
  • Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
  • Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians in the debug, integration, resolving problems, and completion of systems.
  • Determine tools, fixtures, and equipment to be used in fabrication and assembly of mechanical components and complete assemblies.
  • Select appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
  • Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications.
  • Periodically oversee co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.

Qualifications

Education:

A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of mechanical design experience.
