Native Rights Attorney

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Native Rights Attorney to join our team at the BC First Nations Justice Council in Prince Rupert, BC.
About UsThe BC First Nations Justice Council is a rapidly growing organization empowered by the First Nations Leadership Council and in partnership with provincial and federal governments. Our mission is to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and support nations in moving towards sovereignty over justice.
Responsibilities- As a Native Rights Attorney, you will provide legal representation for child protection and criminal matters to clients who would not otherwise have access to legal services.
- You will advocate on behalf of clients for diversion of their legal matters from the formal court system to less intrusive measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols, First Nations Courts, and alternative dispute resolution processes.
- Working closely with the Resource and Support Worker, you will provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of your clients.
- You will develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities, service providers, probation, diversion, Crown Counsel, and other Crown agencies.
- A member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing.
- J.D./LL.B. or advanced degrees/joint J.D./J.I.D. considered an asset.
- 1-5 years' experience in litigation, preferably in child protection with some criminal background experience.
- Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures.
- Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients.
- Knowledge of Canada's Criminal Justice System, including the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Crown Counsel Policy Manual, Gladue principles, and case law.
- Knowledge of British Columbia's child protection system, including the Child Family and Community Services Act and Bill C-92 – An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families.
- Extended benefits package including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans.
- Full-time position (35 hours/week) with option for 75% in-office minimum work arrangement available.
- Salary range: $90,000 - $150,000 commensurate with education and experience.
