Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the development of merchandise strategies in line with division and company directives
  • Communicates strategies to internal and external partners
  • Participates in the planning, execution, and delivery of annual category reviews
  • Ensures product assortment, sales, margins, and buying plans align with budgets
  • Supports the execution of pricing strategies to meet financial objectives
  • Assists in negotiating product costs and promotional programs
  • Develops strong vendor relationships with key suppliers
  • Manages product life cycles, including exit strategies and inventory management

Category Reviews and New Products

  • Completes category reviews for branded or private brand pet supplies
  • Assists with new item evaluation and selection, as well as delisting decisions
  • Supports product launch planning to maximize initial sales and store penetration
  • Ensures recommendations align with Company and market-specific objectives
  • Assists with managing seasonal timelines
  • Completes annual marketing and promotional plans for each vendor
  • Participates in negotiation meetings for store promotions and flyer items with vendors

Pricing Strategy and Execution

  • Researches competitive retail pricing across all banners in line with category role
  • Monitors wholesale pricing for categories
  • Supports pricing strategies to ensure compliance with financial objectives

Vendor Negotiation

  • Participates in negotiations with hardline vendors on various issues, including overstock, incorrect product shipments, late deliveries, and more
  • Assists in reviewing and renewing existing vendor contracts

Key Requirements

  • 4-year bachelor's degree
  • 3+ years of experience in retail, ideally in categories such as pet, grocery, or children's
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel, including vlookup, pivot tables, and queries
  • Thorough understanding of retail purchasing dynamics, including category management, seasonality, and margin requirements
  • Results-oriented with a proven track record
