About the Opportunity

The Nutrition and Food Services Utility Worker plays a vital role in providing excellent patient and retail food service at Nova Scotia Health. Reporting to the Manager/Food Service Supervisor, this position is responsible for preparing and serving meals and supplies to patients, residents, staff, families, and customers. The Utility Worker supports safe food handling procedures and provides overall service excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Meal Selections (Customer Service): Answer patient phone calls, enter meal selections on a computer, and visit patients in their room to enter meal selections on an electronic tablet.
  • Product/Food Preparation/Assembly and Service: Assemble, portion, and serve patient and visitor meals, prepare nourishments, special feedings, beverages, and menu items.
  • Delivery and Collection: Deliver and distribute selective menus and patient meals, collect soiled patient trays, and deliver nourishments and supplies.
  • Food Handling: Participate in receiving and storing supplies, receive and interpret patient diet/meal orders, confirm patient meal requirements, and maintain inventory.
  • Menu Duties: Generate and print menus, reports, tallies, and labels, and print Meditech/STAR reports and compare to CBORD/Vision reports.
  • Food Safety and Sanitation: Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and work areas, maintain basic work area safety and sanitation, and practice safe food handling and hygiene.
About You

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual with the following qualifications:

  • Grade 12/GED or equivalent, or demonstrated skills and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated competency in English and basic Math.
  • Restaurant experience is considered an asset.
  • Customer Service Skills are considered an asset.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to provide services and achieve departmental and/or organizational goals.
  • Ability to perform duties within expected timeframes and standards of accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively while demonstrating civility and respect.
  • Competencies in other languages are an asset, French preferred.
  • Frequent physical demands include extensive standing and walking, bending, lifting (maximum of 35-40lbs), pulling and pushing, and transferring/transporting equipment.
Hours and Compensation
  • Permanent, Full-Time; 75 Hours Biweekly.
  • $19.26 - $20.02 Hourly.
