Nutrition and Food Services Worker

The Nutrition and Food Services team at Nova Scotia Health is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Utility Worker to join our team in the patient and retail food service setting. As a Utility Worker, you will play a critical role in preparing and serving meals and supplies to patients, residents, staff, families, and customers. You will also be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing patient trays, related equipment, and workplaces, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and serve patient meals and supplies, including assembling, portioning, and serving meals, as well as delivering and collecting patient trays.
- Participate in receiving and storing supplies, including food and non-food items, using First In First Out (FIFO) procedures.
- Receive and interpret patient diet/meal orders, confirming patient meal requirements and inventory management.
- Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and work areas, maintaining basic work area safety and sanitation.
- Perform other duties as required to support the team and achieve departmental and organizational goals.
We are looking for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have:
- Grade 12/GED or equivalent, or demonstrated skills and/or relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated competency in English and basic math.
- Restaurant experience and customer service skills are considered assets.
- Ability to work as part of a team to provide services and achieve departmental and/or organizational goals.
- Ability to perform duties within expected timeframes and standards of accuracy.
- Ability to communicate effectively while demonstrating civility and respect.
The Utility Worker will work in a patient and retail food service setting, with frequent physical demands including extensive standing and walking, bending, lifting (maximum of 35-40lbs), pulling and pushing, and transferring/transporting equipment. Special footwear may be required for some food service areas, and the employer will reimburse for the cost of safety shoes up to the amount noted in the Collective Agreement.
Compensation and BenefitsThe successful candidate will be offered a competitive hourly rate of $19.26-$20.02, as well as eligibility for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
