Job Title: Building Inspector

Join the City of Windsor team as a Building Inspector and play a critical role in ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.

Job Summary:

The Building Inspector will be responsible for conducting site inspections to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and related legislation. This includes inspecting construction and demolition sites, reviewing plans and specifications, and investigating complaints.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and related legislation
  • Review plans and specifications to ensure overall compliance with the Ontario Building Code
  • Investigate complaints and apply enforcement regarding contraventions of statues, regulations, and bylaws
  • Provide instruction to contractors, architects, engineers, and the public on regulations and required construction practices
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports, and review consultants' field reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Verify that materials and methods of construction meet approved standards and construction practices
  • Issue orders to comply when infractions of regulations are found, file court charges, and give evidence in court when legal action is required to obtain compliance
Qualifications:
  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus (3) years of post-secondary education in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalencies
  • Provincial Qualifications from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in General Legal/CBO, House, HVAC - House, Plumbing House
  • Current, valid, and lawful Class 'G' Driver's License in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, for the purposes of operating a City of Windsor vehicle, and provide a driver's abstract as a condition of employment
  • Experience and education in the design and installation of building, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
  • Experience in a computerized office environment and familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite of Products
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and other related standards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in all mediums
  • Knowledge and ability to apply the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations relevant to building construction
