Job Summary

The Shelter Support Specialist plays a vital role in providing emotional support, information, referrals, and advocacy to women and children in crisis. This position requires a strong understanding of the complex issues affecting women and children in poverty, including specific challenges faced by Aboriginal women, women of color, aging women, and women with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide low-barrier harm reduction, trauma-informed support and assistance to women and children in crisis.
  • Act in accordance with The Bloom Group's philosophy and values.
  • Facilitate day-to-day communal living among residents of the Women and Children's program.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and service providers.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Community Social Services, Social Service Work, or a related field.
  • Two years of recent related work experience providing support to women and/or children in crisis within a residential setting.
  • Level 1 Occupational First Aid Certificate.
  • Mandt training.
  • Food Safe Certificate.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Narcan training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Indigenous and Racialized women.
  • Knowledge of child welfare and protection issues, including relevant legislation and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including de-briefing, active listening, conflict resolution, group facilitation, and one-to-one direct support.
Working Environment

The Shelter Support Specialist will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a high degree of independence and autonomy. The ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide non-judgmental, client-centered support is essential.
