Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Bilingual Underwriting Specialist to join our team at Foresters Financial. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for reviewing insurance application files, establishing relationships with producers, and making informed underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze insurance application files to determine the level of risk associated with each applicant.
  • Communicate with producers to provide underwriting decisions and explain the reasoning behind them.
  • Balance investigative costs with risk management requirements to make informed underwriting decisions.
  • Order medical tests and assessments as required, and arrange for additional assessments from professional resources.
  • Research and interpret information relevant to the application, including product details, legislation, and medical information.
  • Document the applicant file on our underwriting systems, coding and entering data from received medical reports.
  • Complete a full underwriting assessment of the application, considering competing factors such as new business income and risk of financial loss.
  • Finalize the underwriting decision within approval limits, distinguishing standard from preferred and preferred plus risks.
  • Initiate processes to refer application files for reinsurance as required.
  • Compose related correspondence to members and producers, including advisory letters and letters containing confidential medical information.
  • Participate in the research, review, and analysis of underwriting related legislation and regulations, and current underwriting issues and trends.
Key Qualifications
  • 5+ years of underwriting experience.
  • Achieved AALU and working towards FALU/FLMI designations.
  • Strong medical and financial underwriting knowledge.
  • Experience with simplified issue and final expense type products.
  • Knowledge of underwriting theory, principles, methods, systems, processes, and standards.
  • Demonstrated risk assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Knowledge of the interpretation and application of underwriting legislation and regulations across the US.
  • Knowledge of the Foresters purpose, goals, and objectives to ensure compliance of decisions with Foresters policies and standards.
