Mental Health Liaison Nurse

Prairie Mountain Health is seeking a highly skilled Mental Health Liaison Nurse to join our team. As a key member of our emergency department, you will play a critical role in providing mental health consultation and support to patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities:- Assess and consult with patients presenting to the emergency department with mental health concerns and/or substance abuse.
- Collaborate with emergency department healthcare teams to develop treatment, discharge, and transfer plans.
- Provide mental health consultation and support to patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Process treatment recommendations and referrals in collaboration with emergency department physicians.
- Support and implement recovery-oriented practices.
- Conduct follow-up calls to patients as required to assess the effectiveness of interventions planned in the emergency department.
- Process and implement referrals to community resources in collaboration with the emergency department.
- Obtain collateral information from community service providers, family, and other healthcare institutions.
- Function as a visible resource within the emergency department to provide general support to patients and families experiencing stressful situations, crisis, loss, and serious illness or injury.
- Demonstrate competency in mental health crisis intervention, psychosocial assessment, and other treatment modalities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychopharmacology.
- Knowledge of cultural diversity and practices of populations served.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of substance use and co-occurring disorders.
- Liaise with appropriate community and hospital services to access resources and advocate for patients and families.
- Liaise with patients' current outpatient mental health providers to collaborate on patient care plans.
- Liaise with psychiatrists on call and other units and departments involved in patient care.
- Support behavioral management of patients in the emergency department, including pharmaceutical, physical, and environmental restraint of aggressive patients.
- Liaise with acute psychiatric inpatient units and crisis stabilization units to coordinate admission processes and provide thorough reports.
- Participate in the development of community plans for clients who frequently access emergency room treatment and support in conjunction with mental health programs and/or emergency department staff.
- Provide telephone or telehealth consultations to Prairie Mountain Health emergency departments for mental health presentations, including telephone screening assessments and collaboration, providing recommendations and support to regional rural ED staff.
- Assist in providing psychological support to families of critically ill or deceased patients and linking with community resources as needed for patients in the emergency department.
- Support families and act as a clinical resource to colleagues regarding management of psychiatric, intoxicated, stressed, angry, and aggressive patients.
- Provide support and education to patients and families related to mental health concerns, such as support organizations, medication, and resources.
- Use available technology, such as EDIS and applicable electronic healthcare records.
- Document and report findings to the emergency department and team, including mental health assessments, suicide risk assessments, and recommendations for appropriate disposition.
- Participate in the development of mental health policies, guidelines, and forms for use in the emergency department or inpatient units on various mental health topics.
- Participate in evidence-informed professional development, demonstrating critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the implementation of policies and guidelines.
- Support and act as a preceptor for students in the clinical environment.
- Directly report to the Mental Health Program but are accountable to and collaborate as part of the Emergency Department team with the Clinical Manager or designate of the Emergency Department.
- Maintain regular communication with the Manager, submitting reports/statistics as required, notifying the Manager of any critical situations that may have broad regional impact for individuals or other parts of the healthcare system.
- Participate in Emergency Department meetings as appropriate.
- Demonstrate the ability to foster a collaborative interdisciplinary environment that supports quality services, quality improvement, and staff empowerment.
- Possess sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Vulnerable Persons Act, Child & Family Services Act, and Protection of Persons in Care Act.
