Job Description

The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for assessing, developing, and coordinating social, recreational, and therapeutic programs that cater to the needs, interests, and abilities of individuals in care. This role requires a deep understanding of the importance of respecting and promoting the dignity and individuality of each person, recognizing their unique cultural, spiritual, and psycho-social needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments to identify patient needs and develop programs that reflect those needs.
  • Experience in a social service or long-term care setting is an asset.
  • Facilitate activation programs and demonstrate experience in planning programs for patients with dementia and various physical limitations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills, as well as planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written, and strong computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
  • Establish workload priorities in collaboration with others and demonstrate a creative, energetic, and approachable demeanor.
  • Genuine interest in working with seniors and current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position and complete other tasks as requested.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, or equivalent.
  • Gentle persuasion or Montessori preferred, and CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Minimum 3 years of recreational coordinator/activation experience.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Enjoy working with clients of all ages and possess reliability.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to handle difficult situations objectively and consistently.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with a team.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of various software programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and proficiency with email.
  • Commitment to continued learning and a current criminal reference check and vulnerable sector screen.

Standards of Performance

The successful candidate must demonstrate ongoing competency in completing all duties and responsibilities of this job description, in response to changes by the regulating body, as well as agreed-upon specific goals and objectives.
