Commissioning Engineer for Battery Energy Storage Systems

Role Summary:
The Commissioning Engineer for Battery Energy Storage Systems will be responsible for managing activities required for commissioning/start-up and warranty requirements for utility battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee the site commissioning personnel, ensuring construction testing and QA documentation is available and assembled into the turn-over document books for the client.
- Track site commissioning activities and report to supervisor and client.
- Support and ensure the safe energization of electrical equipment as per energization procedure.
- Work with discipline engineers to identify and coordinate interconnection, documentation, and coordination requirements pre and post construction.
- Support site turnover and O&M documentation.
- Manage and organize the site commissioning managers' tasks, deliverables, and activities.
- Coordinate onsite plant commissioning and performance testing.
- Coordinate and work with site commissioning personnel in establishment of the Safety Tagging, Lockout & Work Permit Program and ensure compliance with its provisions.
- Work with the Construction Manager or their designee to jointly develop the Punch List prior to release of the system/equipment to Commissioning.
- Manage the activities related to implementing project specific commissioning plan and coordinates pre-commissioning activities handover documents.
- Interface with the Owner's Operations Department to schedule O&M training. Support the field Electrical, Mechanical, Instrument/Controls, SCADA Commissioning Specialists, and Vendor representatives in the scheduling, supervision, and performance of all commissioning, testing activities, and documentation.
- Support Warranty requests for completed project sites.
- Operate Company vehicle to oversee site operations.
- Attend work regularly and punctually, as scheduled or expected.
- Comply with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Presents, supports and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.
- Follows safety and security procedures and determines appropriate action.
- Reports potentially unsafe conditions and uses materials and equipment properly.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required.
- 2 or more years' experience with electrical utility scale commissioning personnel and activities preferred.
- 1 or more years' experience with battery storage utility scale commissioning preferred.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally 51-75% required.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Understand and implement safety requirements as outlined by NFPA 70E.
- Outage planning and coordination review and oversight as outlined in NFPA 70E.
- Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.
- Familiarity with NERC guidelines and various ISO and TSO organization requirements is preferred.
- Familiarity with DCS / SCADA control systems and methods for utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems is preferred.
- Ability to interpret and integrate contact documents.
- Ability to read and understand SLD, technical drawings, and installation manuals.
- Ability to assist in the development and interpretation of project schedules.
- Ability to communicate both internally and externally with both personnel and clients.
- Intermediate level of knowledge in:
- Underground and overhead distribution design; transmission systems and design; single and three phase electrical design.
- DC systems architecture and testing.
- Field construction, commissioning, and startup experience preferred.
- National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) standards, NESC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE/IES/API Standards.
- NETA and IEEE standards as related to utility scale battery energy storage facilities. EMS systems, BMS systems, Inverters, Medium Voltage Transformers, MV and LV cabling, grounding, and BESS specific component testing is preferred.
- Organization, planning, decision making, problem analyses, and leadership.
- Commercial performance of Battery Storage System.
- Utility scale battery energy storage facility testing for EPC or Utilities in the United States is preferred.
- Functional competencies include attention to detail, communication, continuous improvement, prioritization, and teamwork.
Anticipated base salary range: $73,000 - $86,000. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
