Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Underwriter to join our team at Definity. As a key member of our Specialty Insurance team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality underwriting services for complex accounts with high hazard risk exposures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and evaluate risk submissions, policy changes, and renewals to ensure accurate and timely decision-making.
  • Analyze complex risks with high potential for severe losses or high loss frequency, applying underwriting judgment to mitigate potential losses.
  • Underwrite business that does not qualify for regular branch writing, utilizing expertise to develop and implement effective underwriting strategies.
  • Apply advanced underwriting judgment, developed through handling high-exposure risks, to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Order and analyze inspections, financial reports, location intelligence, NatCat exposures, and other rating tools to inform risk assessment and decision-making.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions of risk acceptance and pricing with brokers and clients, ensuring alignment with company goals and objectives.
  • Handle high-risk segment business, leveraging expertise to develop and implement effective underwriting strategies.
  • Other duties include production calls on brokers, assisting in field underwriting of accounts, attending industry functions, mentoring junior staff, and conducting business development duties as required.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated high-level understanding of commercial property risks, including regional nuances and coverage differences across Canada.
  • Strong MS Excel skills, with ability to analyze complex data and develop effective underwriting strategies.
  • Proven knowledge of regional differences and insurance regulations across Canada, with ability to apply expertise to drive business growth and profitability.
  • University degree or college diploma required, with CIP designation an asset.
  • Ideally, years of experience underwriting a wide variety of risks, with ability to apply expertise to drive business growth and profitability.
  • High-level understanding of regional differences and insurance regulations across Canada, with ability to apply expertise to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Experience with cross-border and multinational placements, with ability to apply expertise to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Able to quote new business, make policy changes, and issue renewals, maintaining corporate service standards.
  • Able to negotiate with brokers, build new relationships quickly, and have a solid understanding of the actions insurers take and the impact on brokers and their clients.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with ability to gather information, analyze, and solve complex problems.
  • Detail-oriented and strong problem-solving skills, with ability to gather information and analyze complex data.
  • Knowledge of insurance products an asset.
