Traditional Healing Coordinator

About the Role:

The Indigenous Wellness Coordinator provides counseling, support, education, and facilitation of traditional Indigenous healing services to patients, families, and health professionals at Alberta Health Services. This role involves providing spiritual, educational, and cultural support to Indigenous patients and families through individual and group counseling, including:

  • Establishing supportive relationships with patients and families
  • Assessing the impacts of multigenerational trauma and assisting with the healing process
  • Raising patients' awareness regarding traditional healing practices and options available
  • Fostering respect for and increased knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, cultural values, and traditional principles of wellness among patients and staff
  • Providing referral support to connect patients and families to culturally safe and appropriate traditional healing resources and services

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Direct provision of spiritual, educational, and cultural support to Indigenous patients and families
  • Completing and maintaining detailed patient reports and service logs
  • Collaborating with healthcare teams to provide integrated and culturally safe healthcare service delivery

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, the candidate must have:

  • Recognized competence in the use of traditional Indigenous practices
  • Training and guidance in the use of traditional Indigenous approaches to wellbeing
  • Ability to facilitate connection to traditional healing practices
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting or human services field
  • Advanced experience/knowledge of Indigenous healing methods, culture, and traditions

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Knowledge and respect for the diversity of Indigenous populations and communities
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history, worldview, perspectives, beliefs/values, culture, and traditions
  • Knowledge and ability to teach and provide use of traditional Indigenous protocol, traditional medicines, and Indigenous healing methods
