About the Role

The Municipality of Red Lake is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fire Chief and Chief Building Officer to lead our fire and emergency services department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the administration, planning, and direction of all aspects of the fire department, including fire education, fire prevention, fire suppression, leadership of employees, and rescue activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead overall operations of the fire department, including suppression, training, fire prevention, maintenance, and administration.
  • Create a culture of collaboration, communication, and customer service in leading, training, and developing staff within the department.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and assess plans and policies related to service delivery.
  • Participate in local and regional emergency planning processes and the Fire Chiefs' Association at the provincial and regional level.
  • Lead emergency management programs as Community Emergency Management Coordinator.
  • Lead overall operations of the building department, including effective operation, administration, and budgeting.
  • Enforce all statutory requirements under the Ontario Building Code Act through the examination of plans and specifications, site inspections, and issuance of permits.
  • Lead, supervise, and train building and by-law enforcement staff.
Requirements
  • At least 10 years of progressive firefighting experience, 3-5 years of leadership experience, and NFPA 1001 certification.
  • A post-secondary diploma in a Fire Service-related discipline and a graduate of the Ontario Fire College Company Officer Program, and/or Fire Prevention Officer program, Trainer Facilitator or equivalent, NFPA 1021, 1031, 1033, 1035, and/or 1041 would be assets.
  • IMS100, IMS200, EM200, and EM300 or willingness to obtain within 1 year.
  • Superior knowledge of current firefighting and fire prevention methods, including fire scene investigations.
  • Ability to effectively supervise volunteer firefighters.
  • Working knowledge of the Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, and all related applicable Federal and Provincial Legislation and Regulations.
  • Ability to register with MMAH as CBO in Tier 2 or willingness to obtain Tier 1 within 2 years and Tier 2 within 4 years of start date.
  • Knowledge of Municipal By-Laws and understanding of Official Plan and Zoning By-laws, including but not limited to permit issuance, plan review, and inspections.
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and health and safety policies and practices.
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, effective communication, resourcefulness, attention to detail, adaptability, problem-solving, strategic thinking, decision-making, organization, and multi-tasking, time management, and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Intermediate computer skills (MS Office).
Workplace Requirements and Conditions
  • Valid class 'DZ' Ontario Driver's License in good standing, and current CPR and First Aid.
  • This position works a variety of hours for meetings outside of standard business hours, including extended hours when responding to emergency incidents.
  • Location: Onsite Red Lake, Ontario.
