Fire Safety Codes Officer

The Opportunity:
The Fire Safe Codes Officer is a dedicated professional responsible for enforcing fire safety regulations and codes to ensure the protection of life and property. This multifaceted role involves comprehensive inspections, enforcement and compliance, collaboration with various stakeholders, as well as active participation in education, training and community fire safety initiatives. The Fire Safe Codes Officer serves as a vital link between the community, regulatory authorities, and emergency responders. The Fire Safety Codes Officer position is a progressively responsible position which includes four levels. Specific scopes of practice are prescribed and regulated by the Safety Codes Council for each level of certification.
As our preferred candidate, you will have:
Completion of Grade 12. A Journeyman Certificate in a construction trade or possesses a diploma from a technical school or a combination of experience and education that is relevant to an ability to effectively perform the duties of the position is an asset.Entry level certifications and designations are minimum of Fire Safety Codes Council Group B Inspector Level 1, with a preference for Group C Investigator Level 1. Progression in Fire Safety Codes certification and designations is required. Must obtain, and maintain Fire Group B2 Inspector, Fire Group C2 Investigator, Fire Group E Petroleum Tanks. NFPA certifications are considered an asset – 1031 (Fire Inspector), 1033 (Fire Investigator), 1035 (Public Educator). Must obtain and maintain an appointment as a City of Red Deer Bylaw officer under the Municipal Government Act. Certificates or Diplomas in areas of study applicable to emergency services work and business activities and/or Building Safety Codes Officer Designation are considered positive attributes. Promotion is based upon successful completion of required Safety Codes Council Courses as required for applicable certification levels, including a yearly RDES performance evaluation. Maintain a valid Alberta driver license. (Class 5 Minimum). Ability to read, understand and interpret various applicable Federal, Provincial, and Municipal Fire and Building Codes, Acts, Regulations and Bylaws. A working knowledge of NFPA standards, the Criminal Code of Canada, the Safety Codes Act and related statutes and By-Laws. Demonstrated strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all employees, the public and allied emergency services personnel. Ability to express ideas, oral and written, in a clear, concise, understandable and grammatically correct manner in English. Proven proficient use of a computer and software programs. (FDM, Microsoft Office, others). Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction, plan, co-ordinate and implement procedures, and work independently with minimum supervision. Demonstrated proficiency and working independently and prioritizing responsibilities and workload efficiently. Demonstrates effective problem-solving abilities. Demonstrates current knowledge of legislation, regulation, bylaws and policy and procedures and proven ability to effectively apply these as they relate to the workplace. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment or independently to accomplish goals and objectives. Proven ability to interpret information and comprehend messages. Proven ability to communicate in English, in both oral and written formats. Knowledge of current fire prevention education programs. Demonstrates strong abilities in the effective delivery of public education programs. Proven ability to organize, prioritize and demonstrate effective time management skills. Demonstrates commitment to personal and professional growth. Demonstrates detailed knowledge of the City and surrounding area. Proven ability to modify approach and behaviour to effectively deal with specific situations, individual or groups in various work environments. Ability to adapt to technological and organizational changes. A knowledge of photography and the specialized equipment used in fire investigation. Ability to communicate clearly to various audiences and speak to large groups of people and conduct effective presentations.

Remuneration:
$39.46 to $63.13 per hour.
Hours of Work:
80 hours biweekly, 4 10-hour shifts. Monday to Thursday followed by Tuesday to Friday which includes a 2 days off, 4 day off rotation.
