Training Officer

**The Opportunity**:
This Level I-III Fire/EMS Training Officer position requires specialized technical knowledge and whose primary focus is instruction and evaluation of an individual’s demonstration of competency within the Fire Suppression, EMS, Technical Rescue, HAZMAT emergency response and mitigation disciplines. This also includes ongoing Quality Assurance and Quality Control and accreditation within the department’s operational and training programs. A Level 3 -Fire/EMS Training Officer is responsible for supporting the Chief Training Officer in training program development and maintenance (training & reference materials), instructional design and delivery, test bank development and evaluation(s) of their assigned portfolio. They participate in various aspects of the Departments training programs and provides support and assistance to the Administration, Operations and overall Training Branch as directed or needed within the scope of competency and levels of authority.
- Minimum grade 12, GED, post-secondary education
- Diploma or Undergraduate Degree is considered an asset in the field of Educational Studies, Adult Learning and Education or Instructional Design and Delivery.
- Currently registered with and maintains ACP certification with the Alberta College of Paramedics
- Valid Alberta Operators License, Class 3 and 4 with Q endorsement.
The Training Officer position is a progressive responsible position which includes three levels. Placement within the position may be modified based on previous experience and education.
Level 1:
Eight (8) years of experience in Fire/EMS industry
Completion of the following courses or certifications and/or required to obtain within 1 year of entering the position:
- NFPA 1041 Level 1
- NFPA 1001 Level 2
- NFPA 1002
Level 2:
Eight (9) years of experience in Fire/EMS industry (including 1 year minimum as a Fire/EMS Training Officer with required Level I course requisites completed).
Completion of the following courses or certifications prior to advancing to Level II to be obtained within 1 year of completion of Level I requirements:
- NFPA 1041 Level 2
- NFPA 1021 Level 1
- NFPA Hazardous Materials Technician
- NFPA 1006 - Started
Level 3:
Ten (10) years of experience in Fire/EMS industry (including 2 year minimum as a Fire/EMS Training Officer with required Level II course requisites completed).
Completion of the following courses or certifications prior to advancing to Level III to be obtained within 1 year of completion of Level II requirements:
- NFPA 1403 - Live Fire Instructor
- NFPA 1006 - Technician Level (Trench, Rope and Confined Space)
- NFPA 1521 - Incident Safety Officer
- Knowledge of methods and strategies in all aspects of emergency operations or communications. Demonstrated successful ability in the techniques of instruction and adult education. Ability to prepare lectures, demonstrations, lesson plans, training aids and materials.
- Ability to implement training schedules.
- Skilled in interpersonal relations, demonstrated ability to lead and motivate people.
- Current Instructor/Coordinator/Evaluator within Fire Suppression, Technical Rescue, HAZMAT emergency services discipline. Additional Instructor/Coordinator/Evaluator in other disciplines is desirable.
- Ability to effectively use all personal protective devices and clothing supplied by the Department.
- Knowledge and ability to effectively operate equipment related to the programs and services provided by the department
- Knowledge of current communications educational requirements and methodologies
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations with respect to Provincial legislation and Departmental procedures
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to effectively deal with people in a training environment.
- Ability to work unsupervised and take action on an initiative within given guidelines.
- Proven ability to work independently or in a team situation.
- Requires strong computer skills and familiarity with current office suite software. This position works in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
- Demonstrates strong abilities in the effective delivery of public education programs.
- Proven ability to organize, prioritize and demonstrate effective time management skills.
- Demonstrates commitment to personal and professional growth.
