Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Recreation Therapist to join our team at Circle of Care. As a Recreation Therapist, you will play a vital role in planning and conducting recreation activities with groups at our Adult Day Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Recreation Facilities Management
    • Ensure the effective and safe operation of Day Centre facilities
    • Assist in the preparation and development of monthly calendars and letters
    • Ensure policies and regulations are adhered to
    • Monitor the use of recreation equipment and facilities
    • Collaborate with all staff at the Day Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of clients
  • Recreation Programs Development
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based programs for clients at the Day Centre
    • Perform ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness and adjust as needed
    • Schedule programs, entertainment, students, and volunteers as required
    • Orient and supervise volunteers and students as needed
  • Inventory Control and Related Duties
    • Oversee the purchase, planning, design, construction, and upkeep of recreation facilities and areas
    • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrate use of materials and equipment
  • Team Building and Leadership
    • Participate in team initiatives and meetings
    • Communicate, collaborate, and lead by example to build support for agency vision and departmental goals
    • Build rapport with team members to ensure a high-performing team
    • Highlight the connection between overall strategy and day-to-day activities
    • Act as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change
  • Risk, Health, and Safety Management
    • Identify and report health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner
    • Participate in health and safety processes and procedures
    • Maintain a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices
    • Participate in all health and safety training initiatives
    • Take proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice
    • Develop a plan to identify, manage, and/or minimize client safety risks or situations
    • Assess the severity of adverse client safety/risk events and determine the best follow-up and action plan
    • Collaborate with funders and follow additional processes as required
    • Call emergency services when necessary
    • Evaluate potential hazards and identify clients at risk for adverse health and safety events
    • Report all safety events impacting clients, caregivers, and families in a timely and honest disclosure
    Qualifications
    • A degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of two (2) years of community college in Recreation Therapy
    • Demonstrates sound work ethics and dedication
    • Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
    • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certified
    • U-First training an asset
    • Experience working with frail and impaired elderly and their families
    • Experience working with seniors who have Alzheimer's disease and dementia
    • Experience in recreational programming for seniors
    • Intermediate computer and writing skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Clear communication skills
    • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team
    • Current CPR training would be an asset
    • Able to work occasional evenings on a rotational basis
