At Halifax Water, we are seeking a highly skilled Operations Technologist - Engineering Approvals to join our team. As a key member of our Engineering Approvals department, you will be responsible for inspecting the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to our Halifax Water Systems.

You will work closely with our Project Manager - Engineering Approvals to ensure that all installations meet our high standards and adhere to our Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Inspecting installations of Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to our Halifax Water Systems.
  • Collecting, producing and retrieving record information associated with these installations.
  • Ensuring that all installations meet our requirements and adhere to our Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications.
  • Reviewing and completing Service Connection cards for adherence to our Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications.
  • Reviewing acceptance packages for adherence to our Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications.
  • Assisting in the locating of our Halifax Water infrastructure as requested.
  • Inputting record information collected by global position system devices and surveying equipment into our databases.
  • Liaising with customers, developers, consultants, contractors, Halifax Water staff and other outside agencies.
  • Undertaking Halifax Water Systems inspections, testing and commissioning as required.

Reporting relationships include:

  • Reports to: Inspections Coordinator - Engineering Approvals
  • Supervises: n/a

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Post-Secondary diploma in Civil Engineering Technology with Certified Engineering Technologist designation.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a municipal engineering field.

Other requirements include:

  • Must be a registered member with TechNova as a Certified Engineering Technologist.
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training: First Aid, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS), Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Thorough knowledge of Halifax Water's Rules and Regulations, Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specification.
  • Through knowledge of Provincial and Municipal acts, by-laws, and legislation relating to the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to our Halifax Water Systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of national, provincial and municipal standards, specifications, policies and guidelines relating to the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to our Halifax Water Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability in municipal engineering computer applications.
  • Demonstrated ability in Global Position Systems data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to use surveying equipment.
