Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Coding Standards and Data Quality Specialist to join our team at Providence Health Care. As a key member of our Health Information Management department, you will be responsible for leading coding standards and data quality initiatives, providing expert guidance and support to our coding team, and ensuring the highest level of data quality and integrity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead coding standards and data quality initiatives, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Develop, maintain, deliver, and evaluate coding training materials for new hires, practicum students, and returning staff.
  • Serve as the internal point of contact for coding queries, liaising with external stakeholders, including CIHI, BCRCP, and other database programs.
  • Act as a liaison between coding coordinators, coding leadership, and other HIM teams, ensuring the quality of data obtained from coding patient records.
  • Work with coding application specialists to explore new modes of healthcare delivery, where codified patient data is required to support program management.
  • Develop policies and procedures, and maintain manuals and systems related to coding standards and data quality.
  • Develop and recommend data quality audit processes, employing quality assurance and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Assist manager and coding coordinators with testing tools for hiring coding staff, and defining acceptable proficiency levels.
  • Liaise with other members of the LM HIM leadership team to ensure coding standards and data quality efforts align with the goals and objectives of LM Health Information Management.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management diploma or bachelor program.
  • Five years of recent, related experience in coding inpatient and surgical day care records in a tertiary setting, including two years as a data analytics or data quality analyst.
  • Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM) certification and active membership with the Canadian Association of Health Information Management (CHIMA).
  • Ability to travel between HIM sites, requiring access to a vehicle and a valid BC driver's license.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of quality assurance techniques and processes related to continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize report writer tools, such as Crystal Report design, MS SQL Server.
  • Demonstrated ability to code in ICD-10-CA/CCI and abstract in the CIHI Discharge Abstract database.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Case Mix Groups, Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS), Resource Intensity Weight (RIW), and Expected Length of Stay (ELOS).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and ability to utilize computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and teach staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop learning materials and tools.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work to deadlines under pressure, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others, demonstrate leadership, and maintain cooperative working relationships.
