Job SummaryWe are looking for a Law Clerk with 3-5 years of experience in a litigation law clerk/paralegal role to assist our lawyers in managing assignments and priorities, ensuring deadlines are met and files are consistently moving forward. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, be able to adapt to changing priorities, and have a strong understanding of current legal terminology and civil procedure court rules.
Key Responsibilities- Drafting & Revising
- Draft court documents, including pleadings, discovery plans, mediation memos, motion materials, affidavits of documents, costs outlines, and settlement documents.
- Draft correspondence to all levels of Court, opposing counsel, and external parties.
- Reviewing & Summarizing
- Review and summarize various productions received from clients, opposing counsel, and external parties.
- Review examination for discovery transcripts and summarize undertakings.
- Proofread outgoing material.
- Preparing & Assembling
- Prepare and assemble various briefs and other materials required for case conferences, hearings, motions, and trials for all levels of Court.
- Prepare undertakings charts and monitor and follow up on undertakings.
- Prepare all forms with a deep understanding of court practice directions and rules of civil procedures.
- Liaising & Communicating
- Liaise with clients, opposing counsel, and external parties as required.
- Communicate potential issues to the attention of the solicitor in charge.
- Liaise with sheriff and bailiff's offices.
- Miscellaneous
- Perform other duties as required (i.e., faxing, scanning, filing).
- Schedule appointments and meetings.
- Invoice clients.
- Organize files, documents, and folders.
- Bind hard copies, if necessary.
- Law Clerk Diploma and/or Paralegal License/Diploma.
- 3-5 years of experience in a litigation law clerk/paralegal role with a reputable Canadian law firm.
- Solid understanding of current legal terminology and working knowledge of civil procedure court rules.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with litigation support software applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and ACL.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to adapt communication style as necessary.
- Superior ability to multi-task and handle competing deadlines and demands.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently.
- Team player.
- Experience with Clio is an asset.
