About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Business Development Director to join our team at University of Toronto Press. As a key member of our Publishing leadership team, you will be responsible for driving business growth and development across our products and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute business development strategies to drive revenue growth and expand our market presence.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, partners, and internal teams.
  • Lead and manage a high-performing sales team, responsible for recruitment, retention, and development of sales talent.
  • Develop and implement data-driven sales and revenue plans to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and execute sales and marketing strategies.
  • Manage sales budgets and capitalization requirements, working closely with the Vice President, Publishing.
  • Develop and maintain a global network of sales and distribution agents to support business growth.
  • Oversee the development and execution of contracts and agreements with clients and external collaborators.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders and departments, including marketing, distribution, and editorial teams.
  • Meet regularly with the Publishing Leadership Team to communicate results and consult on operational activities and short- and long-term plans.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary graduate, business degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in sales, revenue generation, strategy, and business development, including staff management, in publishing or related field.
  • Proven track record of building a coaching culture and effective team dynamic, with a focus on customer satisfaction and revenue growth.
  • Strategic thinker with data-driven approaches, able to effectively lead data analysis and manage key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Results-oriented, with a focus on achieving agreed-upon outcomes and ensuring key objectives are met.
  • Resilience and comfort with change, with the ability to recognize when change is necessary and develop effective action plans.
  • Highly developed, professional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate teams to produce high-quality results within tight timeframes.
  • Ability to assess situations to determine importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions that are timely and in the best interests of the organization.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, subscription management systems, and CRM systems (i.e., SalesForce).
