Nunavut Legal Aid is a respected organization seeking an experienced Senior Family Law Advocate to provide exceptional legal services to qualified Nunavummiut in the territory's court system.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in family law and child protection matters, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality advocacy services. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert legal advice on family law and child protection procedures to clients, both virtually and in person.
  2. Pursue oral and written advocacy on behalf of clients, ensuring their rights are protected and represented effectively.
  3. Representation at procedural hearings and motions, showcasing excellent communication skills and negotiation abilities.
  4. Attend and represent clients in matters related to custody, access, support, child protection, support enforcement, and other family law matters.
  5. Review court documents, draft pleadings, and other necessary documents, upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
  6. Deliver family law services in the Nunavut Court of Justice, circuit courts, and virtually, catering to diverse client needs.
  7. Maintain accurate records, data, and produce reports as required, adhering to organizational policies and procedures.
  8. Travel within the territory may be necessary to assist in circuit courts and work closely with eligible clients.
  9. Perform additional duties and administrative tasks as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
Qualifications and Skills

To succeed in this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold membership in good standing with the Law Society of Nunavut or be eligible for registration.
  • Demonstrate extensive experience in family law, including knowledge of relevant legislation, such as child protection law, and the ability to research and retrieve information as needed.
  • Proven expertise in handling complex family legal issues, showcasing sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience practicing law as a family lawyer, including providing advice, mediation, settlement conferences, trials, and other critical services.
  • Exemplify a client-focused approach, driven by personal motivation and accountability.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently, with limited supervision, and lead in a fast-paced environment.
  • Showcase exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating effective collaboration with colleagues and clients.
  • Display intermediate-level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other essential software tools.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with SharePoint, Teams, and other digital platforms, ensuring seamless integration into the organization's technology infrastructure.
  • Average annual salary range: $125K - $190K, inclusive of comprehensive benefits package.
