Job Summary

The Safety and Health Director plays a critical role in ensuring the implementation of industry-leading safety and health management systems, driving key initiatives, and enhancing the local ES&H culture and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategic, sustainable safety and health programs, tools, and initiatives in compliance with client, provincial, and federal requirements.
  • Collaborate with department leads to ensure safety and health programs and initiatives are proactive, effective, and aligned with project goals.
  • Foster working relationships with supply chain members to ensure proactive engagement, initiatives, and risk mitigation techniques are deployed.
  • Interpret, analyze, and trend safety and health performance data to provide bespoke, feasible solutions that promote positive safety and health performance.
  • Develop and implement strategic safety and health workshops, summits, and meetings with all levels of the supply chain.
  • Assist in developing and implementing KPIs to support short- and long-term strategies and meet project goals and objectives.
  • Participate in meetings with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise on specialized safety and health requirements affecting project design, construction schedule, and cost.
  • Work with the Bechtel Project Director, GBU ES&H Manager, and Legal to address and resolve pending agency non-compliances, notices of violations, potential fines, and enforcement actions.
Requirements
  • Extensive experience in managing large, complex infrastructure projects in Canada.

Level 1: Bachelor's or Master's degree in an environmental, safety, health, or science-related discipline and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.

Level 2: Bachelor's or Master's degree in an environmental, safety, health, or science-related discipline and 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to provide repeatable and innovative solutions to safety and health-related challenges.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with key members of the project management team and project directors.
  • In-depth knowledge of Ontario and Canadian laws/regulations, extensive rail construction experience, and best management practices for minimizing potential safety and health impacts during project execution.
  • Excellent leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of collaboration, technical expertise, and effective interpersonal skills.
