Job Summary

:

The Director of Safety and Health is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team at Bechtel Corporation, responsible for ensuring the implementation of industry-leading safety and health management systems. This role involves developing key initiatives and increasing the local ES&H culture/performance.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement strategic, sustainable safety and health programs, tools, and initiatives in compliance with client, provincial, and federal requirements.
  2. Collaborate with various Department Leads to ensure safety and health programs and initiatives are proactive, effective, and aligned with project goals.
  3. Foster working relationships with Supply Chain members to ensure proactive engagement, initiatives, and risk mitigation techniques are deployed.
  4. Interpret, analyze, and trend safety and health performance data to provide feasible solutions that promote positive safety and health performance.
  5. Develop and implement strategic safety and health workshops, summits, and meetings with all levels of the Supply Chain.
  6. Assist in developing and implementing KPIs to support short- and long-term strategies and meet project goals and objectives.
  7. Participate in meetings with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of specialized safety and health requirements.
  8. Work with the Bechtel Project Director, GBU ES&H Manager, and Legal to address and resolve pending agency non-compliances, notices of violations, potential fines, and enforcement actions.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Extensive experience in managing large, complex infrastructure projects in Canada.

Level 1

Requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree related to environmental, safety, health, or science-related disciplines and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.

Level 2

Requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree related to environmental, safety, health, or science-related disciplines and 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated ability to provide repeatable and innovative solutions to safety and health-related challenges.
  2. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with key members of the Project Management Team and Project Directors.
  3. In-depth knowledge of Ontario and Canadian laws/regulations, extensive rail construction experience, and best management practices for minimizing potential safety and health impacts during project execution.
  4. Excellent leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of collaboration, technical expertise, and effective interpersonal skills.

Additional Qualifications:

  1. Advanced knowledge of environmental, safety, and health disciplines and application methodologies in the engineering and construction industry.
  2. Ability to establish collaborative and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Industry certification through an organization accredited for credentialing ES&H practitioners.
