Counsellor - Student Support Specialist

About the Role:

This is a temporary academic staff position replacing a bargaining unit employee. The successful candidate is responsible for providing short-term, solution-focused, counselling support to students dealing with personal, mental health and academic issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counselling support to students living in Residence or other areas of the college as required;
  • Provide crisis intervention services including preliminary triage and direct liaison with local crisis support services;
  • Act in a consultative and training role to faculty and staff to identify and address student issues;
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on related issues and make referrals as required;
  • Participate as a collaborative and consultative member of the Student Success Division and faculty team to achieve College goals that contribute to student retention and success in the learning environment;
  • Build and maintain community partnerships to address specific ongoing needs of students and work collaboratively with mental health agencies and other community, provincial and national organizations;
  • Work on special projects as assigned to advance the provision of Student Success at Lambton College.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Psychology, Disability Studies, Social Work, Special Education, or a related discipline required;
  • Must be a registered member qualified to practice the controlled act of psychotherapy in the Province of Ontario;
  • Minimum 5 years' recent and relevant experience;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience assisting students with disabilities in a post-secondary environment;
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered; preference will be given to applicants meeting the education requirements;
  • Demonstrated expertise assisting and accommodating students with a wide range of disabilities and accessibility needs including: students with learning disabilities; mental health issues; students who are deaf/hard of hearing, and students experiencing medical and mobility issues;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and strong interpersonal skills required;
  • Commitment to working collaboratively to remove barriers and enhance the learning environment for students with disabilities in accordance with all legal and ethical requirements;
  • Must have a strong commitment to providing quality professional services and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team;
  • Experience and qualifications with accessibility counselling will be seen as an asset.
