Job Title: Addiction Specialist

At Brandon University, we are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Addiction Specialist to join our team. As an Addiction Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing youth-centered services to promote prevention and harm reduction strategies, intervention, planning, and follow-up services for youth concerning addictions and underlying mental health struggles.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct assessments to determine the acuity of risk and knowledge of harm reduction and safety measures.
  2. Develop and implement youth-centered healing and treatment plans in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  3. Build rapport and relationships with youth to establish trust and facilitate open communication.
  4. Establish realistic goals in collaboration with the youth and other support staff to achieve meaningful outcomes.
  5. Organize and facilitate support and educational group sessions to promote healthy behaviors and coping strategies.
  6. Provide consultation, feedback, and support to staff concerning addiction-related clinical issues, intervention techniques, and procedures.
  7. Provide crisis intervention and support for youth with health and safety concerns related to addiction.
  8. Participate in staff meetings and planning days to discuss program concerns, clinical treatment issues, and unit management.
  9. Develop and evaluate harm reduction protocols and standards of practice.
  10. Manage inventory of required equipment and supplies for assessments, interventions, and groups.
  11. Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to perform assessments, coordinate client care, and provide treatment services through a two-eyed seeing approach.
  12. Identify and connect youth with internal and external supports, including community resources, to support the treatment plan and youth's development.
  13. Maintain thorough and up-to-date documentation and records, including reports and treatment plans.
  14. Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and advancement through participation in training, workshops, and other professional development opportunities.
Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as Social Work, Psychology, or Human Ecology.
  2. Training and expertise in substance use treatment and harm reduction philosophies and strategies.
  3. Minimum of two years' relevant working experience.
  4. Experience working with vulnerable and at-risk populations is preferred.
  5. Demonstrated experience and competence working independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, preferably working across agencies/systems in the provision of coordinated care.
  6. Mental health/crisis training certifications, including NVCI and ASIST, are considered an asset.
  7. Knowledge of Indigenous culture or willingness to learn, including participating in cultural practices, programming, and ceremonies alongside youth.
  8. Knowledge of planning, implementation, and evaluation of client treatment plans.
  9. Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  10. Valid Class 5F full driver's license, access to a reliable vehicle, and satisfactory driver's abstract.
  11. Satisfactory Criminal Record and clear Vulnerable Sector checks.
  12. Clear Child Abuse Registry and satisfactory Prior Contact checks.
  13. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  14. Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  15. Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Office software.
