About this role:

Vaco is an owner, manager and developer of well-located retail and commercial real estate across Canada. With a portfolio spanning approximately 65 million square feet of gross leasable area, comprising over 700 properties primarily focused on supermarket-anchored shopping centres and stand-alone supermarkets.

This hybrid role is based in downtown Toronto, with 3 days per week in the office.

The successful candidate will lead initiatives to reduce our energy and greenhouse gas emissions across a diverse portfolio of retail, industrial, office and residential properties.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implementing identified decarbonization strategies to achieve long-term net zero goals
  • Setting and monitoring carbon reduction targets and KPIs, ensuring alignment with global standards and company commitment
  • Identifying risk and opportunities related to decarbonization, integrating them into enterprise risk management
  • Preparing well-structured reports and presenting to senior executives to guide decisions
  • Managing the execution of decarbonization initiatives, ensuring timely and within budget delivery & targeted outcomes for existing operations and new developments
  • Promoting the adoption of innovative technologies and best practices in carbon reduction
  • Analyzing and prioritizing projects that cut energy and emissions, like upgrades and changes to how we operate
  • Managing external consultants to provide and report ongoing performance data for review on future projects
  • Providing technical guidance for the implementation of energy and carbon reduction retrofits, metering, data collection and solar projects
  • Working with cross-functional teams to integrate decarbonization goals into business processes
  • Delivering education and training of team members in other business units to enable the implementation of decarbonization projects
  • Building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, representing the organization in sustainability forums.

About you:

  • 7+ years of experience in energy management for various types of real estate
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, such as mechanical, systems, electrical, or related fields
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP), CCP (Certified Commissioning Professional) accreditation an asset
  • Expertise with building energy and carbon reduction strategies, data analytics and sustainability practices in addition to metering and energy analytics
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively manage and lead projects and programs involving internal stakeholders
  • Collaborative, adaptable and strong interpersonal skills with ability to work with colleagues across different functions and levels of the organization
