Indigenous Student Advisor

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Indigenous Student Advisor to join our team at the York Region District School Board. As an Indigenous Student Advisor, you will play a critical role in supporting the academic success and well-being of self-identified First Nation, Métis and Inuit students.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement a process for engaging students in cultural awareness, student leadership, peer mentorship, and student advisory opportunities.
- Conduct and/or facilitate sessions with groups of self-identified students at various YRDSB locations.
- Work with the Indigenous Education Team to develop programming and provide appropriate supports for self-identified FNMI students.
- Support awareness of Indigenous histories, cultures and perspectives among all staff and students.
- Plan and implement a Student Advisory Program, including communicating with school staff and administration, arranging permissions with parents, arranging transportation, and ordering necessary materials.
- Develop and implement a method to gather and analyze student voice to inform strategic goals of FNMI education in YRDSB.
- Provide support for schools with self-identified students to develop culturally appropriate programming and interventions.
- Act as an advocate for self-identified Indigenous students, parents/guardians, school staff and administration to support student success.
- Support the system and school work in closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in the areas of literacy and numeracy, retention of students in school, graduation rates, and advancement to post-secondary studies.
- A university degree or college diploma in a relevant field or a minimum of two years' experience with Indigenous students or equivalent as approved by the board.
- Comprehensive knowledge and/or experience with First Nation, Métis and/or Inuit cultures, histories and perspectives.
- Experience leading groups of students from various schools and/or organizations.
- First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit background and/or experience working with First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit children.
- Knowledge of Indigenous teachings would be an asset.
- Access to your own transportation and a valid Ontario Driver's License is required.
